Florida Association of Nurse Practitioners
Advocacy through Action

Legislative Update - February 6, 2020

Posted over 5 years ago

As the legislative session ends week 4, much is being done to place front and center the need to modernize Florida’s healthcare laws. In a week that saw a lot of lobbying and press releases from the various special interests within Florida, Sachs Media has been blanketing the airwaves, social media space, and print media of targeted markets with educational marketing for HB 607 and full practice authority (FPA) for advance practice nurses. Along with the stakeholder coalition Floridians United for Health Care and the Florida Coalition of Advanced Practice Nurses, FLANP is continuing the effort to round on all Senators and House members throughout session by getting APRNs and APRN students to the Capitol EVERY TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY. This does not require an all day effort. If you can donate 3-4 hours to walking around the halls of the Senate and House, it would go a long way.

Week 3 included the Advocacy Days for the Florida Association of Nurse Anesthetists (FANA) who had over 200 CRNAs in white coats at the Capitol and provided a white-out background for the press conference for our cause’s champion Rep. Cary Pigman (physician from Sebring, FL). This press conference like that held the week before during the Florida Nursing Association’s (FNA) Advocacy Days was a very important and visible step toward promoting our agenda. This week did not see movement of our bill but the FPA bill (HB 607) should be heard in the Health and Human Services committee in the coming weeks and then on to the House floor for a full vote. We are optimistic that it will pass the House and need everyone to visit the Capitol and help with swaying the Senate. Please continue to register your visit and report post-visit.
