Call to Action - SB 230 & HB 583

Posted about 1 year ago

We need YOU to reach out to your House Representative and let them know NOT TO SUPPORT HB 583! And we need YOU to reach out to your State Senator and let them know NOT TO SUPPORT SB 230!

These bills focus on health care practitioner titles and abbreviations, specifically not allowing nurse practitioners who have earned their doctorate degree to refer to themselves as Doctor xxx, your nurse practitioner, under the guise of misrepresentation. This also impacts nursing faculty who, despite having the necessary education to use the appropriate title, would be restricted from doing so.

Both state,

'Advanced practice registered nurses licensed under part I of chapter 464 may use only the title "advanced practice registered nurse" or abbreviation "A.P.R.N." and the following role titles and abbreviations, as applicable:

  1. "Certified registered nurse anesthetist," "nurse anesthetist," and "C.R.N.A."
  2. "Clinical nurse specialist" and "C.N.S."
  3. "Certified nurse practitioner" and "C.N.P."
  4. "Certified nurse midwife" and "C.N.M."
  5. "Certified psychiatric nurse," "psychiatric mental health advanced practice nurse," and "C.P.N."
  6. "Autonomous advanced practice registered nurse" and "A.-A.P.R.N."'

This language is limiting and unfair to nurses which is why we need you to ACT NOW!

AANP also opposes legislation and regulations such as this that would prohibit nurses and other healthcare professionals from clearly representing their credentials to patients and the public. You can read more about AANP's position here.

If you do not know who your House Representative is, you can easily search to find out here. And to find your State Senator, you can search to find out here.

Once you know who to call and email, contact them ASAP and ask them not to support these bills.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at legislativecommittee@flanp.org.
